How to disguise the lack of a single tooth. Dentures, types, and prices.

We have 32 teeth in our mouth. One tooth may be missing, or all of them, as well as intermediate situations. Possible solutions to replace the teeth are the same in every case, with different specificities according to the place of the missing tooth, quality, and quantity of the maxillary bone, number of missing tooth or material used to fabricate the dentures.

We lose our milk teeth at our child or young age. It’s a natural process, and permanent teeth erupt near to 18 years. In our adult age, we have to keep our teeth healthy so we don’t lose them.

When we lose teeth, there are three types of problem:

  • Aesthetic: it’s very visible if anterior teeth are missing.
  • Functional: chewing and talking.
  • Different processes start in our mouth and, if they are not treated with dentures, they can result in more alterations, like:
    1. Displacement of antagonist teeth: teeth of the opposing arch elongate (are extruded) because there is no tooth with which it to close.
    2. An inclination of teeth next to a missing tooth.
    3. Occlusal and bite plane: Dental interference appears.
    4. Cavities and dental sensitivity in our teeth.
    5. Loss of bone and gum in a no-teeth zone: the alveolar bone is the bone part of the jaws where the teeth are located. When we lose our teeth, this alveolar bone starts to degenerate over the time until it disappears, leaving the maxilla bones thinner, narrower and more prone to fracture of the jaw bones that still remain.
    6. Functional overload of remaining teeth and the risk of dental fracture increases.
    7. Food accumulation where there’s no teeth and gingivitis, periodontal disease (pyorrhea) and cavities appear.
    8. Facial aging because teeth and alveolar bone supports cheeks and lips. Without teeth, lips and cheeks are sunken and the appearance of the face ages.
    9. Wrinkles on lips appear.

  • Cavities: caused by three factors (plaque, bacteria and time) that converge so that cavities appear on the teeth. Cavities destroy tooth enamel or dentin. Sugar intake and bad oral hygiene cause its appearance. We treat it with filling and it is always better to detect it before it affects the tooth nerve. It can cause intense pain and difficult to calm. That’s because annual reviews with the dentist are important. Reviews at the child and young ages are important every six months. Fluorine helps us to prevent it. It has to be in toothpaste and a daily or weekly cleaning with mouthwash is recommended. Actually, cavities index has been reduced because of awareness of oral hygiene.
  • Periodontal disease (pyorrhea): an infection that affects the gums and the bone that supports the teeth, causing their decrease. There is a hereditary genetic component to consider. It is contagious and doesn’t cause pain. The symptom that the patient feels is bleeding gums and teeth movement. We treat it with antibiotics and periodontal maintenance (hygienes and curettage) and specifical treatments (gum grafts, bone regeneration…). It’s important to avoid plaque accumulation and tartar. It’s recommended to visit the dentist and rule out periodontal disease in patients with heart disease.
  • Dental trauma: caused by accidents, sport or improper use of our teeth, like open bottles.
  • Bruxism: tooth overload over time when we are tightening or crunching can cause tooth fractures, dental wear and loss of teeth. If we use dental splints regularly, our teeth are protected and they can extend our teeth life. Also, we can treat the masseter muscle (cause of tightening) with botulinum toxin (Botox).
  • Severe general diseases: leukemia, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, cancer… The first symptom can be gingival bleeding.
Fortunately, there are so many options to put dentures depending on the patient can remove them or not, if there are above dental implants, material (resin, ceramics, metal, titanium…). This variety of options is good because there are different prices, so dentures are cheap for everybody and you can choose the best dental prostheses for everyone.

Oral rehabilitation can be expensive treatments. There are so many brands and qualities. It’s important to visit the dentist and a confident surgeon.

When we want to restore our missing teeth, first of all, it’s necessary to decide if we want a dental implant treatment.

We consider dental implants as the best option. They allow recovering aesthetics and function without touching the remaining teeth, they are “invisible” and nobody knows that you have implants. Only your dentist knows about them. We can solve every situation. To be treated with dental implants, it’s very important to have a good quality and quantity of maxillary bone. If not, it’s necessary to do a bone graft.

Many patients are surprised to know that we need a TAC before placing dental implants. Why do we ask? We need to know the thickness and density of maxillary bone remaining to choose the best implant for your dental rehabilitation. We will show it to you with 3D simulation software. It’s important not to wait to replace missing teeth if you are thinking about getting implants for your dentures.

There are different options to rehabilitate missing teeth without dental implants.

If we don’t have any tooth and we don’t want implants, the treatment is a traditional complete prosthesis. They are cheap, they have little stability, are moving when you are talking or chewing. Over time, they have to be passed and readjusted to the gums.

The long-term success of chosen treatment depends on a regular program of reviews and oral hygiene with the dentist. At our clinic, we personalize it for every patient. There are patients coming every six months or every year because of its maintenance.

All teeth, natural teeth or dentures, need care.

Longevity causes that, today, if we have our teeth, they are worn, broken incised edges, fractures or fissures of enamel, darkened… We can rejuvenate our smile with dental veneers: conservative dental aesthetic treatment and even a mechanical reinforce of our teeth.
