Prosthodontics

What is Prosthodontics?

The prosthesis on implants or implant-supported, is different from the conventional prosthesis. Once the implants are placed, they will help us to hold the teeth, that is, the implant acts as if it were the root of a tooth, and the crown or visible part of the tooth, is the one that connects to the implant.

When we only restore one tooth. It is different if we do it on teeth in the anterior sector, where aesthetics are crucial, or if, on the contrary, we restore a molar in the posterior area, where function is the most important. A good prosthesis begins with a precise and ideal implant placement in the three dimensions of the space.

When we restore several teeth. It does not imply placing an implant per tooth to be replaced, in fact, it is often advisable not to overload the prosthesis with many implants, since the biological width between implants, and between implants and gingiva can be altered, hindering aesthetic resolution or even causing inflammation and gum recessions. This type of prosthesis can also be screwed or cemented, depending on the convenience of each situation.

When we restore all the teeth of an arch. It can be only the missing teeth (implant-supported total fixed prosthesis), the missing teeth and gingiva (hybrid prosthesis) or the teeth, the missing gum and also giving an important lip volume to support the position of the lips in relation to the rest of facial structures. This prosthesis, which is usually bulky, is called an overdenture.

Types of Prosthesis over Implants

  • Screwed, with the advantage that we can remove the teeth whenever we want.
  • Cemented, there is no previous facility, and in case of having to disassemble the prosthesis, the situation is more complicated.

Immediate Loading Prosthesis

Finally, there is the possibility of making the prosthesis immediately after implant placement. This is what we call immediate load prostheses. This situation is very advantageous for the patient since they enjoy implants from the beginning, it requires good primary stability of the implants, good bone density, advanced knowledge of implant prostheses, and the making of a second definitive prosthesis after a few months, when the tissues have adapted to the implants.

In the following images we show an example of the results that are achieved with oral  rehabilitation using implant prostheses.
