Dental prostheses on implants

Implant-supported prostheses, or prostheses on implants, are different from conventional prostheses. Once the implants have been put in place, they will be used to anchor the teeth. This means the implant acts as the root for the tooth and the crown or visible part of the tooth is connected to implant.

When we only restore one tooth. It depends on whether the tooth is located in the front of the mouth, where aesthetics is key, or if we are restoring a molar in the back, where function is most important. A good prosthesis starts with precise, proper positioning of the implant in 3-D.

When we restore several teeth. This doesn’t mean we have to put in one implant for each tooth to be replaced. In fact, it is often best not to overload the prosthesis with too many implants, as this can affect the biological width between implants and between the implants and the gum, making aesthetics more difficult or even leading to recessed or inflamed gums. This type of prostheses can also be screwed in or bonded on, depending on each situation.

When we restore all of the teeth on one arch. This may be only the teeth that are missing (full fixed implant-supported prosthesis) or the missing teeth, gum and lip volume to support the position of the lips with regard to the rest of the facial structures. This prosthesis, which is normally quite large, is called an overdenture.

Prostheses on implants can be:

  • Screwed in, which has the advantage of allowing us to take out the teeth whenever we want.
  • Bonded, which doesn’t have the previous advantage and if the prosthesis must be removed the situation is more complicated.

Finally, there is the option to put in the prostheses immediately after the implant surgery. This is what we call immediate-load prostheses. This choice is extremely advantageous for the patient, as they will have implants from the very beginning, however it requires proper implant stability, good bone density, advanced knowledge of prosthesis on implants and a second, final prosthesis to be loaded after a few months, when the tissue has adapted to the implants.

The following images show an example of the results that can be achieved with a rehabilitation using prosthesis on implants.
